October 2026

I read some good books in October. I also had some disappointments. It seems that I'm sending a lot of books back to the library unread or unfinished. However I did get back the my books with "last" in the title with a pretty good read. Biggest surprise of the month was how much I enjoyed the one shown above.

Fiction:
Under the Falls by Russo, Richard
Rock star reluctantly returns to his childhood home. Things don't go well.
Children of the Wolf by Geni, Abby
Serial killer's family.
The Birthing Tree by Peters, Amanda
Nova Scotia  Miꞌkmaq
The Queen of Roses by Kelly, Julia
Set in Pasadena/Altadena in at the turn of the 19th to 20th century.
The Seekers of Deer Creek by Thai, Thao
I enjoyed this tale of two sisters searching for the father's connection to a minor Vietnamese artist even though it was somewhat overwritten. Too many metaphors and similes.
The Girl with a Thousand Faces by Dean, Sunyi
Ghostly goings on in Hong Kong 1943-1975.
Paper Ghosts by Allen, Sarah Addison
These ghosts are in a dual timeline coming-of-age novel in North Carolina.
Dodge City by deWitt, Patrick
Draft dodger (1970s) goes from LA to Canada via NYC. Disappointing read.
Exit Party by Mandel, Emily St. John
Another  disappointment.
Habits of the Sea by Ernshaw, Shea
I liked everything about the first 3/4 of the book, but I didn't care for the hurried ending.

The Last to Vanish by Miranda, Megan

Nonfiction:
Maman's Homesick Pie: A Persian Heart in an American Kitchen by Bijan, Donia
